Introduction to Kullu Valley


Kullu valley is a broad open valley formed by the Beas River between Mandi and Larji. This valley is famous for the beauty and its majestic hills covered with pine and Deodar forests and sprawling apple orchards. The course of the Beas river presents a succession of magnificent scenery, including cataracts, gorges, precipitous cliffs and mountains, clad with forests of Deodar, towering above trees of Pine on the lower rocky ridges.Kullu valley is sandwiched and great Himalayan ranges. It is believed that this valley was once a vast lake. This valley is 75 km. in length and about two to four kms in width and ends near famous Rohtang pass, 25 km. North of Manali.

The town of Mandi, kullu, Bhuntar, Manali and Shamshi lie in this valley. The climate of Kullu valley is healthy and delightful and has little snowfall in comparison to the Lahaul and high Shimla ranges. The people of Kullu valley are very skilful. They have a naturally joyous temperament particularly during fairs and festivals. 

Famous attractions of this valley

1.     Naggar   

Naggar is situated on the left bank of the Beas. It is 25 km from Kullu at altitude 1760 meters. It was capital for kullu Rajas in ancient time for 1400 years. There are large number of famous temples notably; Vishnu, Tripura Sundari and Lord Krishna. Naggar castle and Roerich Art gallery is main attraction of nagger.

2.     Naggar Castle

Naggar Castle is magnificent historical building..Naggar Castle was built by Raja Sidh Singh of kullu valley around 1460 A.D. It is situated in Naggar town near Manali. It is made up of stone and wood, it is perfect blend of European and Himalayan architecture.  Recently it is converted into heritage hotel, run by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.


3.     Nehru Kund

A natural spring of clean cold water named after the late Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, who used to drink water from this spring during his stay in Manali. It is located, on the Manali-Keylong road. This spring is believed to be coming from ‘Bhrigu Lake’.

4.     Roerich Art Gallery

Roerich Art gallery is situated in the Nagagr town. If you are art lover than you love this place. Here you can see old monuments and paintings by Nicholas Roerich. This art gallery was named after Russian painter, explorer and art lover Nicholas Roerich who resides in nagger. His love for Himalayas inspired him to paint thousands of paintings of Himalayas.

5.     Hidimba temple

Build in 1553 A.D. also known as ‘Doongri Temple’ dedicated to the Goddess Hidimba (Hirma Devi), the wife of Bhima, has a four tiered pagoda shaped roof with a doorway carved with figures and symbols. Although carving is simple yet beautiful. This temple was built by Raja Bahadur Singh of Kullu. On his order both hands of the Chief Workman were chopped, so that he should not built another temple of equal charm and style.

6.     Hot springs

There are many hot springs in kullu valley some of them are Vashisht, Manikaran. Vashisht is 3 km from Manali . it is famous for hot water springs and temples of Vashisht Rishi and Lord Rama. It is located on the bank of Beas, but well above the river.

An Introduction to Himachal Pradesh


Himachal Pradesh is a north Indian state which is also known as Dev Bhumi means "land of god" (Adobe of god). Himachal takes its name from the Himalayas. Himachal literally means “Land of snowy mountains”. Himachal Pradesh is a small world in itself. Someone has drawn a beautiful picture of Himachal Pradesh in his poetic words, "Eternal snows, lush green forests, singing streams, dancing words, lovely lakes, verdant vales, emerald meadows, smiling glaciers:- this is the picture of Himachal Pradesh which sprawls in the North Western lap of the Himalayas."

How Himachal Pradesh emerged and its History


Himachal Pradesh came into being as a ‘CHIEF COMMISSIONERPROVINCE’ of the Indian Union on 15th April 1948 as a result of the merger of 30 erstwhile princely states of Punjab and Shimla hills into the Indian Union. In 1951 it was made a part ‘C’ state. On 1st July 1954, the neighbouring part ‘C’ state of ‘Bilaspur’ was integrated with Himachal Pradesh. In 1956 Fazil Ali headed State Reorganization Commission recommended to abolish the categorization of states thus it granted the status of Union Territory. Its status as Union territory continued till the award of a full-fledged statehood on 25th January 1971.


Geography of Himachal Pradesh


Himachal Pradesh is bound between 30°22’ to 33°12’ North latitude and 75°47’ to 79°4’ East longitude. To the east, it forms India’s border with Tibet, to the North lies state of Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand in the south-east, and Haryana in the South and Punjab in the west. The entire territory of Himachal Pradesh is mountainous with altitude varying from 350 to 7000 metres above the sea level. Himachal Pradesh is a hilly and mountainous tract. Geographically it forms part of western Himalayas, and thus presents an intricate pattern of mountain ranges, hills and valleys. There is general increase in elevation from West to East and from South to North.

Topographically, Himachal’s territory from South to North can be divided into three zones – ‘The Shivaliks’or Outer Himalayas, Inner Himalayas or ‘Mid mountains’ and ‘Alpine Zone’ or the Greater Himalayas. The lower hills of district Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur and lower parts of Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur are known as ‘Shivalik Hills’.

In the Himalayas, there are enough opportunities for trekking, skiing, fishing, mountaineering, riding, sightseeing and boating. Natural beauty, ecology and environment, the rich cultural heritage of the Himalayan state is all the best recreational resources. The top tourist destination of Himachal is Kullu valley, Dharamshala, Manali, Chamba, Mandi. Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh and it is the most urbanized city in the state.Its peace and beauty make it different from other urban cities in India. Kashmiri cuisine

Kashmiri cuisine is one of the best cuisines of world and found in Kashmir valley region, these cuisine evolved from the cuisines of Iran, central Asia and northern Indian plains. Kashmiri food is mild in taste but rich in flavour, Rice is staple food of Kashmir region since ages but meat is integral part of cooking and mainly mutton, fish and chicken is preferred in this region. Rogan Josh

Rogan josh is combination of two Urdu words Rogan means oil and josh means passion which literally means something cooked in intense heat. It is Persian delicacy which is introduced in Kashmir valley by Mughals. In this recipe mutton is cooked with onions, garlic, ginger, yogurt and hot spices (clove, bay leaves, cardamom, cinnamon). It is characterised by its red colour which comes from dried red Kashmiri chillies.

Gushtaba-(meat balls in white yogurt gravy)

Gushtaba is one of the top dish of Kashmiri cuisine, in this minced lamb meat balls are cooked in yogurt based curry and packed with flavours. Conventionally Gushtaba is prepared with hand pounded minced mutton and fat. Species are added while pounding the fat, pounding makes meat more tender thus give it creamy texture.

Aab Gosht

Aab Gosht is famous dish in which lamb ribs are cooked in milk based gravy with hot spices. Iranian version of this dish is also popular. This is mild dish with juicy and tender meat in milky gravy.

Dum Aaloo

While maximum dishes in Kashmir are non-vegetarian but Dum Aaloo is a vegetarian delight. It is one of the most famous kashmiri food in which whole potatoes are cooked in yogurt, dry ginger, fennel and other aromatic spices to give distinguished taste. You can best enjoy it with naan or rumali roti (thin crust indian bread).

Palak Nadur

Palak Nadur is vegetarian dish which is unique blend of fresh spinach and lotus root. In this dish freshly boiled, mashed spinach is cooked with fried lotus root in authentic Kashmiri spice mixture. Mustard oil gives it a unique flavour with addition of cumin and asafoetida.

Chok Wagun

This side dish is real kicker to taste buds. In this dish brinjal are cut length wise and cooked in tamarind based spicy and sour gravy. Kashmiri red chillies, asafoetida and dry ginger powder give it a unique taste.

Haak

Haak is an authentic Kashmiri dish which is served in all occation. It is one of popular vegetarian dish. Haak leaves are green in colour and looks like spinach. Haak combination with monjii (Ganth gobi) is popular. Haak is cooked in mustard oil and Kashmiri red chillies and it is usually eaten with plain white rice.

Firni or phirni is sweet dish made up of milk, rice and saffron. It is creamy cool dessert garnished with dry fruits. It is perfect end to Kashmiri feast.

Nishat bagh is one of the largest Mughal garden in Srinagar and it is terraced garden which is unique. This garden is most beautiful garden of Jammu and Kashmir and it was designed and built by Asif khan, Brother of Noor Jahan.

Nigeen Lake

Nigeen Lake also known asNageen Lake is sitiuated in Srinagar city, Jammu and Kashmir. It is connected to Dal Lake through narrow strait. It is one of the most beautiful lake of dal lakes and its name come from many trees which encircle it thus makes this deep blue colour water lake perfect spot for tourists. There are many houseboats around its perimeter. Nigeen club, on the bank of lake has bar and tea shop.

Amarnath Cave

Amarnath cave is located at an average altitude of 3888 meters above sea level, it is considered as a prime shrine of Hindus and dedicated to Lord Shiva. This cave is believed to be 5000years old and 60 feet in length, 15 feet in height and 30 feet in width. It is believed that at this place Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality to goddess Parbati. Every year amaranth yatra was conducted during the months July to August. Thousands of pilgrimages bow their head to Shiva .

Best time to visit Srinagar

Best time to visit summer Capital city  is April to September. During this time weather is pleasant and temperature remains between 17 to 30 degree Celsius. During the winter season due to heavy snowfall roads are blocked.

By air: Srinagar is well connected by air services as Srinagar airport is well connected to major airports of country

By road: city is well connected with Jammu by roads. State transport buses as well as private taxi are available from Jammu.

Jammu and Kashmir is a northern state of India which share its international border with China, Pakistan and Afghanistan and state border with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. HISTORY OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR


History of Kashmir is one of the oldest history in the world. Many scholars tells different tales of the history and it’s name origin but all ominously believe that Kashmir emerged when saint kashyapa drained the water from the lake satisar by cutting the hills of Baramulla. Kashmir was known for serving as seat of learning Hinduism before the influence of Buddhism and Islam.  Islam dominate this place in the early 13th century when trade with central Asia was at its peak and trader visited this place. Many saints were come at that time and started preaching Islam. Shah Mirza was the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and Afghan rulers were the last Muslim ruler of Kashmir.
The history of Kashmir become more interesting from 1820 onwards when Sikh overpowered the afghan rule and everything going fine till 1845 when first Sikh war was broke out and two treaties of Lahore and Amritsar were signed. Maharaja of Jammu Dogra ruler Gulab Singh was made the ruler of Kashmir and Maharaja Hari Singh was the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir he laid the foundation of modern Jammu and Kashmir State. After the partition of India and Pakistan the state of J&K was given the choice to merge with either Pakistan or India but after the few month of dilemma, Maharaja Hari Singh Hindu ruler of Muslim majority state of J&K signed the instrument of Accession to Indian Union in October 1947.

GEOGRAPHY OF THE JAMMU AND KASHMIR


There are three major regions of Jammu and Kashmir first Jammu second one is Kashmir and last one is Ladakh. The Jammu and Kashmir is divided into14 districts. Kashmir valley is covered by the forests, lakes, mountains and waterways & stepped fields whereas Jammu region consist of plains, mountains coming on Ladakh region it is cold desert. This region is deprived of rains as this region fall in rain shed area and there are some famous Buddhist monastery are there.
There are several low laying basin in the state like Kashmir valley, Poonch valley, Sind valley and Chenab valley but out of all Kashmir valley is most notable one it spread in the 100 km area and 15230 sq. km in area. The average height of the valley is 1700 meter and river Jhelum and its tributaries were flown in this valley.

CLIMATE OF THE STATE

Climate vary in the Jammu and Kashmir due to its irregular topography. In the southern region i.e. Jammu the weather is monsoonal type and average to moderate rain fall in the monsoon season. During the summer time temperature of the Jammu is blistering hot and can reach up to 40 degree Celsius and it is designated as winter capital of the state on the other hand weather in the Kashmir is pleasant during summer but in winter it is semi arctic. All the rivers and lakes are frozen in the winter.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR


Vaishno Devi Temple
Vaishno Devi temple is famous temple of Hindu goddess. It is situated in the katra which is 48 km from Jammu city. It is well connected by rail and road and nearest airport is Jammu. Temple is situated in the Trikuta Mountain which is accessible by trek of 14 km but one can go up to sanjichhat by helicopter.

Leh/ladakh
Leh and ladakh is cold desert of Jammu and Kashmir and maximum population of the region is Buddhist and this place is worth to visit. Many tourist come to this place every year specially those who love the adventure.

Gulmarg
It is famous for its postcard beauty and it’s proximity to the capital city Srinagar. In winter this placed is covered by snow and many tourist come to this place to enjoy snow and winter sports.
